INCEPTION The Big Under by PENICKart INCEPTION The Big Under by PENICKart
This is one big file, hahaha. I'm conforming to the contest guidelines, so sorry if it takes awhile to view it. Once the contest is over I'll resize it for easier viewing.

So. INCEPTION is easily one of the best films I've seen in several years. I've watched it like 6 times now and my love of it has only grown. Christopher Nolan is on my Influences Meme [link] so when I saw the article for this contest [link] I knew immediately that I had to enter. Best case: I win! Worst case: I get to create a piece of fanart and a new portfolio piece.

Now to catch up with all the other work I'm behind on because of this. :-)

Prep work done in Photoshop, printed in non-photo blue and inked with Japanese brush pens, then scanned back into photoshop where I digitally inked in the Tokyo background and added the Architect first seen in the film. Colors all done in Photoshop as well.

This is cool! I haven't seen the movie, but this is a great well-designed poster-style cover. My favorite part, for sheer skillz, is the man's head to the right of the woman's legs - sorry I'm terrible at actor names, but this whole thing just grabs the eye, and then he's the part I linger on.

One question, though; are the woman's nipples supposed to be so out of place, especially the one on our right? Couldn't tell whether that's one of the dream effects or your only glitch here.

Glad you like the piece. It's technically not for the movie but for a prequel web comic.

I didn't really think her nipples were so out of place; I'm curious why you think they are. They inevitably bring attention to themselves. Adding them was a conscious decision on my part since she's specifically meant to be an object of beauty and sexuality in the story, but if they're drawing the kind of attention you're mentioning then they've done the wrong job. :tears:

Re nipples: Well, they're normally at the most curved/pointed part of the breast, since they're what breasts are FOR - biologically, they're just milk delivery systems, however much we like 'em. In this Inception pic, while the nipple on our left looks maybe a little high, the one on our right is so far above the main curve that it looks over halfway up the breast from where it should be.

Nipple placement can be a real pain. I was just looking at some poor girl's bishi-boy pics a couple of weeks ago, and she'd placed their male nipples front and center of their pectoral muscles rather than lower and to the side the way they should be. A lot of commenters pointed it out, and I hope she didn't feel too awful to post her art again.

If I were able to draw, the tutorial I'd most love to put together would be about drawing 3/4 views of women's necklines/bodices/superhero logos, and how to make sure the two sides match realistically; artists tend to guess them by eye, instead of noting that if the bikini top runs halfway between the nipple and the breastbone on one side, it shouldn't be all the way to the breastbone on the other side, and so on.

Nipple placement also happens to vary greatly on real people. Size, location, orientation, etc... They're all unique, as are the mammary glands they're composed of. I think there might be some illusion in my drawing as well because of the subtle up angle of the shot. I still feel pretty good about their placement. I hope you can forgive me.

We've managed to have a whole conversation about nipples and breasts though! You gotta appreciate that. =P

Yeah, talking about breasts never breaks my heart....

(My second husband loved the fact I'm bisexual, because I wasn't jealous of his looking at other women--after all, I was doing the same.) ;)

As for nipple placement, I'm not going to argue about the one on our left, but the one on our right really looks wrong to me. You're welcome to blow me off, of course, but if you want worry about it, you could check it with another artist or two and see what they think.)

As for my nonsense about why blonde jungle-women are somehow supposed to be so much cooler than native ones, don't worry; I'm enough of a comics fan I enjoy coming up with ridiculous reasons why some piece of totally impossible canon COULD make sense. It's kinda like insult contests; the fun is to come up with one even more over the top than the other guy's. And yes, my ex and I did once decide to compare apples and oranges, just to prove it could be done.)

Even if I don't change the art, I still appreciate your input, especially being a woman. I will take a closer look at it when I get a chance. When you're drawing stuff for a living and constantly moving forward it's tough to go back and change stuff that you've put behind you. It's worth every once in awhile though, and I'm always in pursuit of improving.
